Taser / conducted energy device
- Use of force
A conducted energy device (CED) that temporarily incapacitates a person through an electrical charge. In England and Wales, Taser is classified as a firearm under the Firearms Act 1968 and may only be carried and deployed by officers who have received specific authority from their chief constable and completed an authorised training programme. Its use is governed by the National Police Chiefs' Council guidance on CEDs.
In practice
A Taser deployment must be proportionate to the threat. Officers must consider whether a less harmful tactic would be effective. Each use (including drawing and aiming without firing) must be recorded. Repeated or prolonged use requires particular justification. Deaths in custody following Taser use are referred to the IOPC.
