Misconduct

  • Complaints

A breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour for police officers that falls short of gross misconduct. Under the Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020, misconduct is behaviour that is serious enough to warrant disciplinary action. It is assessed at a misconduct meeting rather than a misconduct hearing. The outcomes available include a written warning or final written warning.

In practice

A misconduct finding does not result in dismissal. The officer continues in service subject to the warning. A subsequent finding of misconduct or gross misconduct within the warning period may lead to more serious action. The process is distinct from the criminal investigation process, though the two may run concurrently.
