Code E: Code of Practice on Audio Recording of Interviews with Suspects

Code E requires that interviews with suspects held at police stations are audio recorded using approved equipment. The code sets out the procedures for starting, conducting, and concluding a recorded interview, including the requirement to inform the suspect that the interview is being recorded and to give them a copy of the recording or access to it. Audio recording protects both the suspect and the investigating officers by providing an objective account of what was said during the interview. The code applies to persons detained under PACE and is supplemented by Code F where video recording is also used.
